From: 22.05.2014 to: 22.05.2014The International Day for Biological Diversity, celebrated annually on 22 May, aims to raise awareness of the vital role of biodiversity for the well-being of humanity. The tremendous diversity of life in the form of animals, plants and microorganisms found in a diverse range of ecosystemssuch as deserts, forests, wetlands and mountains are key to sustaining life on planet earth. The theme for this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity is: island biodiversity. Coinciding with the designation by the United Nations General Assembly of 2014 as the “International Year of Small Island Developing States”, the focus in 2014 is on the value of unique marine ecosystems for the well-being of around 600 million people who depend on them.
