UNHQ, New York
From: 16.07.2024 to: 16.07.2024

The Governments of Armenia and Nepal will host the side event "Perspectives from land-locked mountainous countries on sustainable development and climate change" on Tuesday, 16 July 2024 at 13.15 to 14.30 in Conference Room D during the 2024 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development at United Nations Headquarters.

Mountainous countries, especially landlocked countries, face a unique set of challenges that significantly impact their sustainable socioeconomic development. The vital ecosystems of mountains are facing unprecedented challenges due to climate change, raising number of natural disasters and environmental degradation threatening the livelihoods of millions and jeopardizing global biodiversity.

As landlocked mountainous countries, Armenia and Nepal recognize the need for urgent collective action to address climate change impact on mountain ecosystems and seek to initiate a collaborative dialogue among stakeholders to partnerships at all levels, to facilitate knowledge exchange, and cooperation for tackling many common but also country-specific challenges faced by both countries.

The primary objective of this side event is to identify the main constrains that mountainous countries are facing in the context of climate change and practical solutions that can be introduced to assist their developmental aspirations.
