Fourth International Women of the Mountains Conference

Orem, Utah, USA
From: 07.10.2015 to: 09.10.2015

The Fourth International Women of the Mountains (IWM) conference is being co-organized by Utah Valley University (UVU) and the International University of Kyrgyzstan (IUK) to promote sustainable development in mountain areas worldwide. For the first time, the Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF), a coalition of student clubs at UVU will host this high level forum. It will address the critical issues women and children living in mountainous regions face across the globe and provide a forum to discuss gender equality.

As a part of a social media campaign, UVU has created a new Facebook page, “Keep Mountains in the SDGs” to support the inclusion of mountain issues in the United Nations (UN) post-2015 agenda and also to inform the public about IWM conference updates.

The following participants have confirmed their attendance and contribution for the IWM conference:

  • Samira Harnish the founder and Executive Director of the NGO “Women of the World”.
  • The Women’s Resource Center at University of Utah.
  • Dr. Paul C. Godfrey of the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University.
  • Susan Becker, head of the Altai Assistance Project from Bozeman, Montana.
  • Donna Hawxhurst and Nedra Hotchkins from the Women’s Resource Center at the University of Utah will present during the Leadership Panel.
  • President and CEO of Utah World Trade Center, Derek Miller will give a presentation at the Business Fair and will provide funding for the conference.

This conference will continue the tradition established with the previous International Women of the Mountains Conferences held in Orem, Utah, in 2007 and 2011 and in Puno, Peru, in 2012 to strengthen the involvement of North American mountain communities with the Mountain Partnership (MP).
