Opportunities and Challenges in Conserving Biodiversity in Transboundary Landscapes for Sustainable Development in the Hindu Kush Himalayas

Pyeongchang, Korea
From: 08.10.2014 to: 08.10.2014

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation of Nepal; the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change of India; German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ); Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC); and the Department for International Development (DFID- UK) is organizing a side event to share approaches to biodiversity conservation and management in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region.

The side event, organized alongside the Twelfth Conference of the Parties (COP12) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), will gather global experts in conservation and development in the transboundary landscapes of the HKH region. The event aims to:

·       Discuss lessons learned and challenges in applying the ecosystem management approach for managing transboundary landscapes that balance conservation and development; and

·       Explore ways to promote conservation and protect community livelihoods at the same time, such as creating integrated grassroots institutions and mainstreaming the CBD agenda at the local level.

ICIMOD will also draw attention to biodiversity and mountain livelihood issues with an exhibition booth  that presents its HKH biodiversity conservation and management approaches and initiatives for the entire two-week from 6 to 17 October 2014.

The Conference of the Parties is the governing body of the Convention on Biological Diversity, which meets every two years to review the progress on the implementation of multilateral treaty.
