Afromont Mountain Science Research Symposium

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
From: 22.06.2015 to: 24.06.2015

AfroMont, in partnership with the Climate Science Center (CSC) of Addis Ababa University, will host a Mountain Science Research Symposium in June 2015 to showcase African mountain research and research organizations. The Symposium will also provide an important opportunity for networking and facilitating collaboration between researchers whose work is to understand African mountain systems, mountain societies and long term ecological change.

Presentations on all aspects of mountain research will be welcome, including research dealing with social aspects and livelihoods, political and transboundary issues, biodiversity and ecosystem services, payment for ecosystem services and climate finance, protected areas and biosphere reserves, geology, biogeography, climate change and long term ecological monitoring. The aim is to also showcase student research as well as emerging research initiatives.

Separate discussion sessions are envisaged, for example, to gather thoughts on Sustainable Mountain Development as a movement, and identify research needed to strength this, as well as explore the need for more mountain observatories in African mountains where ecosystems can be monitored, both to record change, but also to assist land managers manage their land effectively. Additional workshops exploring other important issues could also be held, depending on suggestions.

Past AfroMont research and workshop events in Lesotho, Cameroon and Kenya have been stimulating, and the 2015 research meeting, in collaboration with the Climate Science Center (CSC) of Addis Ababa University, will surely add value to all the research on mountains being done in Africa.

Delegates must fund their own travel and accommodation, and there will be, of necessity, an affordable fee levied for the conference.
