World Tourism Day

Worldwide
From: 27.09.2015 to: 27.09.2015

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) invites everyone to take part in World Tourism Day (WTD). Celebrated annually on 27 September, WTD is the leading international event in tourism.  Its purpose is to promote awareness among the global community of the importance of tourism regarding its social, cultural, political and economic importance. The event seeks to address the global challenges outlined in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and acknowledge the power of tourism in achieving these goals.

Each year WTD is accompanied by a different theme and host country which are selected by the UNWTO General Assembly. Burkina Faso has been selected to be the host country for 2015, carrying the theme “one billion tourists, one billion opportunities”.

Tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in mountain regions, attracting 15-25% of global tourism. Revenues generating from mountain tourism are linked to socio-‎economic progress, growth in ‎international commerce and also provide opportunities to expand new markets and enhance cultural exchange. Mountain tourism is economic pillar in many mountain areas, bringing jobs, business opportunities and innovative infrastructural development which further stimulates the economy.

The UNWTO decided in September 1979 to inaugurate World Tourism Day, which was first celebrated on 27 September 1980. The UNWTO believes that the date for World Tourism Day is appropriate because it corresponds with the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970; subsequently the date also comes at the end of the high tourist season in the northern hemisphere and the start of the tourist season in the southern hemisphere.
