IV Sustainable Mountain Development Summit

Arunachal Pradesh, India
From: 07.10.2015 to: 09.10.2015

The IV Sustainable Mountain Development Summit (SMDS-IV) of the Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI) will be convened in Itanagar, the capital of the mountain state of Arunchal Pradesh between 7 and 9 October 2015.  IMI’s state affiliate in Arunachal  Pradesh, the Sustainable Development Forum Arunachal Pradesh (SDFA) will be the local host of the event.

Major themes for SMDS-IV are:

  1. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
  2. Forests & Water
  3. Mountain Agriculture

Disaster is the central theme of the SMDS-IV.  Disaster has been kept as the central theme in light of the recent and devastating earthquake in Nepal that has once again brought the reality of disaster, its implications on life, poverty and local economy into focus.

As was the case in earlier summits, about 250 delegates, comprising legislators, academics, scholars, development practitioners, senior government officials, NGO leaders, media personalities and others from the 11 mountain states and beyond are expected to participate in the SMDS-IV.

Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests have, in principle, consented to grace the occasion as Chief Guest and Distinguished Guest.  The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand will lead the technical session on disaster.

Besides the main conference events, two important side events will be held: the Legislators Meet and the Policy Makers Dialogue.  These sessions will be attended by policy makers and decision makers from across the mountain states.

IMI is a coalition of individuals and institutions formed in 2011 to redefine the architecture of sustainable development across the 12 mountain states in the Indian Himalayas and Northeast India in which it operates. It offers a common platform where diverse stakeholders working on issues pertinent to the Indian mountains come together to engage in an informed debate on identified themes, with the objective of informing and influencing policy formulation in respect of the mountain region. IMI operationalizes this platform through its annual Sustainable Mountain Development Summit, held in a different Indian mountain state each year.
