International Conference on Education as a Driver for Sustainable Development Goals

An international conference titled ‘Education as a Driver for Sustainable Development Goals’ is being organized by Center for Environment Education (CEE) , in partnership with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Government of India. It aims at bringing together global experience and expertise to highlight and strengthen the role of education in realizing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It will be an opportunity to build upon the learnings from the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UN DESD) and recognize education as a key enabler.

The UN DESD has demonstrated how education can play a vital role leading to sustainable development. The UN DESD closed with an International Conference in Nagoya, Japan in October 2014 with the declaration of the Global Action Programme (GAP). The GAP has identified five priority areas to advance the Education for Sustainable Development agenda and enable strategic focus and foster stakeholder commitment. These include advancing policy, transforming learning and training environments, building capacities for educations and trainers, empowering and mobilizing youth, and, accelerating sustainable solutions at local level. Every country and region would need to develop their own GAP agenda bringing in local perspectives and initiative.

In September 2015, the UN also launched Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an outcome of global consultative processes. It is important for ESD communities to look specifically at each goal and determine how education can play an effective role in helping achieve this.

The object of the conference is to bring together the global experience and expertise of using education as a way of achieving SDGs and showcasing the India experience in doing so. Spread over three days, there will be five plenaries and 21 working groups corresponding to the SDGs. Plenary sessions planned during the conference will set the tone and pace for the more focused discussions and interactions in the workshops.

Papers for the ESDG Conference
Papers are invited from academic researchers and practitioners, specifically looking at the interface of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the SDGs. The themes of the SDGs and information sending papers are available on the conference website. The deadline to submit abstracts in 30 November 2015.
