First international Alpine Building Conference

The Alpine Convention will host the first international Alpine conference on building in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany on 16-18 March 2016. The conference will focus on sustainable and energy-efficient construction and building design.

In July 2015, delegations from Austria, France , Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Switzerland as well as representatives of the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention and the observer organizations International Commission for the Protection of the Alps (CIPRA) and Club Arc Alpin met in Merano in South Tyrol, Italy for a workshop between Alpine countries on zero-energy buildings. Focus here was on new building projects, on modernization and renovation projects and on finding solutions to making neighbourhoods viable for the future. The participants prepared the following topics for the Alpine conference on building:

  • Public law requirements for residential and non-residential buildings and concepts for monitoring success
  • Building with local materials, life-cycle approach, embodied energy
  • Energy efficiency and renewable energies, integrated concepts for building shells and special characteristics of the Alpine region
  • Strategies for climate-neutral neighbourhoods, efficiency analyses and carbon-footprint analysis
  • Energy efficiency in building renovation, preservation of high building design standards
