International Day of Forests

Global
From: 21.03.2017 to: 21.03.2017

The International Day of Forests celebrates and raises awareness about the importance of all types of forests. On International Day of Forests, countries are encouraged to undertake local, national and international efforts to organize activities involving forests and trees, such as tree planting campaigns. This year's theme, Forests and Energy, aims to increase awareness about the ways in which sustainably managed forests are key to the world’s renewable energy equation.

Forests are nature’s powerhouse! They are the largest source of renewable energy in the world, providing people with wood fuel to heat homes, cook meals and boil water. But they also energize people in other ways – for example by providing forest foods like berries and mushrooms – or even recharging people’s spirits by providing a place for recreation, peace and inspiration. To celebrate the International Day of Forests on 21 March and this year’s theme, Forests and energy, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is asking you to get out into your local forest – or park, if you live in a city – and make a short video of yourself (or with your friends) telling FAO how the forest energizes you. Feel free to use a smartphone or any other video device – you do not have to use professional equipment!
