Forests and Mountains in the Post-2015 Development Agenda

Governments, major groups and civil society will meet at an event on Forests and Mountains in the Post-2015 Development Agenda on the sidelines of the 8^th session of the UN General Assembly Open Working Group, to discuss how to ensure forests and mountains continue to receive attention in UN processes, as they have since the Earth Summit 1992.

Organized by the the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS),the Permanent Mission of Bhutan to the UN, the Forest and Wildlife Department of Peru, and the Permanent Mission of Romania to the UN, this side event will be moderated by Thomas Gass, Assistant Secretary-General for Policy Coordination and Inter-Agency Affairs in UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA).

The discussion will highlight the vital ecosystem services forests and mountains provide (water cycle regulation, soil protection, biodiversity preservation, climate change) to humanity and also how crucial they are from a social and economic perspective. Mountain degradation and deforestation have been depleting forests and the natural resources in mountains for a long period. Increased social awareness of their value has led governments and civil society to pay more attention to forests and mountains. For example, in an increasing number of countries, deforestation has been reduced or even reverted. If enabling conditions are ensured, forests and mountains can contribute significantly to achieving “The Future We Want”. Read more
