Breaking fresh ground in protecting Alpine Environments – Flood Risk Management Plans

Graz, Austria
From: 25.03.2014 to: 26.03.2014

The Platform Natural Hazards of the Alpine Convention is organizing the conference, “Breaking fresh ground in protecting Alpine Environments – Flood Risk Management Plans,” for Alpine countries to discuss flood risk management plans in Alpine catchments. The discussions promise to enhance participants’ knowledge about the problems and challenges of implementing the plans by looking at specific examples from different alpine countries. Some of the problems encountered in alpine areas are: defining the particular aims, developing a catalogue of measurements or selecting specific methods for flood risk reduction.

European  Directive 2007/60/EC requires European Member States to assess what water courses and coast lines are at risk of flooding, map the flood extent and assets and humans at risk in these areas as well as take adequate and coordinated measures to reduce the risk of flooding. Having identified the river basins and associated coastal areas at risk and drawn up flood risk maps,  European governments are now establishing flood risk management plans focused on prevention, protection and preparedness by 2015.

The two-day meeting will include a half-day excursion in Graz.
