Raising the Profile of Mountains in the Sustainable Development Goals

New York, USA
From: 29.04.2014 to: 29.04.2014

Less than a week before the 11th session of the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this gathering of diplomats, United Nations (UN) staff and civil society representatives will discuss mountain-related goals, targets and indicators to propose. Organized by Permanent Missions of Romania, Nepal and Austria to the UN and the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, the meeting aims to make sustainable mountain development more visible in the Post-2015 development agenda. The most recent OWG focus area document mentions mountains only once – in focus area 14 on ecosystems and biodiversity.

Following opening remarks by Ambassador Simona Miculescu of Romania and remarks by  Ambassador Durga Prasad Bhattarai of Nepal, Thomas Hofer, Coordinator of Mountain Partnership Secretariat (FAO) will give a presentation on mountain-related targets and indicators to propose for the SDGs.The MP Secretariat worked with a team of sustainable mountain development experts to draft a number of targets and indicators related to mountains.
