The Alps and the Ardennes: Sharing Experiences among Transboundary Mountain Areas

The 2013-2014 Italian Presidency of the Alpine Convention, the University of Reims and the Regional Natural Park of the Ardennes are organizing an International Workshop on “The Alps and the Ardennes: Sharing of Experiences among Transboundary Mountain Areas.” This workshop, which is open to the public, will take place on 15 September 2014 in Sedan, France, from 14:00 to 18:30.
In particular, the workshop aims at promoting the sustainable development of mountain areas and it is conceived as an exchange of views about the experience with international cooperation and scientific research gained in the Alps, in order to raise awareness in other mountain contexts such as the Ardennes.
This workshop is aimed at international, national, regional and local authorities, the scientific community and other stakeholders at various levels. It will mainly focus on three main themes: legal and institutional aspects of mountain cooperation, valorization of trans-boundary mountain areas through international labels such as the inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List, as well as cooperation on landscape and nature protection.
The seminar will be followed by a high level round table, aimed at sharing experiences and explore innovative pathways related to international cooperation in the Ardennes, encouraging as well future initiatives to be promoted also in the framework of the new 2014-2020 EU programming period.
The following day, speakers and participants in the roundtable will be invited to the Ardennes for some in situ observation of the specific challenges of the trans-boundary area, as well as ongoing projects, and for a meeting with representatives of local authorities and civil society.
