International Day for Biological Diversity

The International Day for Biological Diversity, celebrated annually on 22 May, aims to raise awareness of the vital role of biodiversity for the well-being of humanity. The tremendous diversity of life in the form of animals, plants and microorganisms found in a diverse range of ecosystems such as deserts, forests, wetlands and mountains are key to sustaining life on planet earth.

Biodiversity for Sustainable Development is the theme for this year’s International Day for Biological. This year’s theme reflects the importance of efforts made at all levels to establish a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the United Nations Post-2015 Development Agenda for the period of 2015-2030 and the relevance of biodiversity for the achievement of sustainable development.
