International Mountain Day (IMD)

Worldwide
From: 11.12.2015 to: 11.12.2015

International Mountain Day (IMD)  is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of mountains, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world’s mountains and highlands. Celebrate with us!

This year, the theme for IMD is ‘Promoting mountain products for better livelihoods’. The celebration will focus on the valuable contributions of mountain products in boosting mountain economies. IMD 2015 provides an occasion to recognize the rapid transformation that authentic mountain products are undergoing due to globalization, economic growth and the demand for high quality goods and services. At the same time, recent trends present opportunities for local development. Emphasizing how mountain communities are protecting biodiversity by producing a wide variety of traditional products and progressive tourism opportunities. Moreover, people who reside in mountain areas can diversify their incomes by promoting typical mountain products such as coffee, honey, herbs and spices, as well as high value handicrafts, like cosmetics and medicines.

While Promoting Mountain Products is the suggested theme for 2015, countries, communities and organizations are welcome to celebrate International Mountain Day through the choice of a different theme that might be more relevant to them. The United Nations General Assembly designated 11 December “International Mountain Day” in 2002. IMD has been observed every year since 2003 to raise awareness about the importance of mountains to life and to bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world. The official hashtag for IMD is #WeLoveMountains.
