International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

Worldwide
From: 09.08.2015 to: 09.08.2015

The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples falls on 9 August annually as this was the date of the first meeting in 1982 of the United Nations Working Group of Indigenous Populations. Each year the event aims to promote and protect the rights of the world's indigenous populations.

Every year 9 August is an opportunity to recognize indigenous peoples and traditional mountain communities for their important contributions to sustainable mountain development. This year's theme, “Ensuring indigenous peoples' health and well-being", highlights the issue of indigenous peoples' access to health care services, as improving indigenous peoples’ health remains a critical challenge.

The lifestyles of mountain communities are often agrarian, and the terrain rough, shaped by harsh climates, affecting the seasonal rhythms of planting and harvesting. Therefore, traditional local communities serve as protectors of traditional knowledge on how to harvest in mountainous environments and they possess knowledge, experience and responsibility that contribute to preserving agricultural biodiversity.

The significance of this event aims to highlight the achievements and contributions that indigenous peoples make to improve world issues such as environmental protection.
