The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation Options in the Forest Sector

Online
From: 06.02.2015 to: 27.02.2015

Recently, attention has shifted towards the role of forests and its products in climate change mitigation which paved the way for various initiatives. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) is organizing an online conference, called “The Economics of Climate Change Mitigation Options in the Forest Sector” to explore how different interventions in the forest sector might help to mitigate climate change, on 6-27 February 2015.

The discussion will allow for the sharing of country experiences as well as analyses of the costs and benefits of various options under a range of different circumstances. The topics will be structured under two themes, namely, “Climate change mitigation through forest management interventions” and “Climate change mitigation through improved wood utilization”. Key discussion points will include:

  • The economic costs and benefits of various mitigation options related to climate change

  • Variation in mitigation potential at different carbon prices and in different regions

  • Impacts of mitigation efforts on value chains of forest products

  • Which option worked well and which did not? What leads to success or failure? What are the barriers in achieving the mitigation potential?

  • What lessons can we learn (e.g. investments and building confidence, policies and incentives, reducing transaction costs)?

  • How these efforts contribute to the sustainable development goals of different countries?

The deadline for registration is 16 January 2015.
