2nd Southern African Mountain Conference (SAMC2025)

Champagne Sports Resort
From: 17.03.2025 to: 20.03.2025

The second Southern African Mountain Conference (SAMC2025) will take place from 17 to 20 March 2025 at Champagne Sports Resort. The theme for the upcoming conference is "Southern African Mountains – Overcoming Boundaries and Barriers".

Focusing on mountains in the southern African region, SAMC2025 will be an in-person event bringing together academics, researchers, early career professionals, practitioners, policymakers, postgraduate students, government officials and others. Participants will engage and exchange experiences, research findings, problem-solve and foster partnerships toward the transboundary and transdisciplinary sustainability of southern African mountains.

SAMC2025 is intentionally multi-disciplinary, with a strong impetus to link the realms of science, policy and practitioners, so all approaches are encouraged. The programme will include plenary sessions, parallel oral paper presentation sessions, poster sessions, panel discussions, and sessions for special interest groups. There will also be review tracks for abstract submissions from science, policy and practitioner sectors that accommodate those sectors to their best advantage. The programme will include an exclusive Royal Mountain Indaba, aimed at fostering dialogue that links customary law, mountains and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The SAMC series is conceptualised by the Afromontane Research Unit at the University of the Free State, the African Mountain Research Foundation, and Global Mountain Safeguard Research  – a joint initiative between Eurac Research and the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security and implemented by the Peaks Foundation.
