Launch of the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development 2022, Malawi

On 3 June 2022, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife and Ministry of Agriculture of Malawi celebrated the launch of the 2022 Year of Sustainable Mountain Development as declared by the United Nations General Assembly. The launch was made in joint commemoration of International Day for Biological Diversity which falls on 22 May, World Environment Day which falls on 5 June and the 75th anniversary of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (WESM).  

The Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Hon. Eisenhower Nduwa Mkaka, attended the event as well as the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture, and senior government officials. Other notable attendees included the FAO Country Representative who gave a statement on behalf of the United Nations.

The launch of the 2022 Year of Sustainable Mountain Development had its own pavilion and banner under the theme “Mountains Matter: for people and the planet” However, the joint event was commemorated under the theme “Only one Earth-Lets build a shared future”. “Dziko ndi limodzi – Tilisamale; tisamale tsogolo la moyo wathu”. This theme called upon everyone to be conscious that we only have one home which is the Earth, and as such we all need to protect and restore our environment to improve the future quality of life.
