The Kimonyi Women Development Group (KWDG) is a women-focused and community-based organization working for food security, health, women's empowerment and environmental preservation. The area of intervention is the volcanoes region bordering the Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda, which is home to rare mountain gorillas. This area is considered the heart of Rwanda's biodiversity, terrestrial carbon storage and potential for tourism. Unfortunately, the region is also one of the most vulnerable landscapes in the country; its ecosystems are highly threatened and degraded as a result of unsustainable exploitation by the local community, influenced by climate change. Since KWDG's establishment in 2017 by women professionals in the fields of agriculture, environment and rural economics, the organization envisions to create strong women groups engaged in innovative sustainable development solutions that work for people and for nature. KWDG is currently focused on production and marketing of organic vegetables. |
