Mountain Partnership at the United Nations

The Leading Sustainable Mountain Development side event took place 16 July 2018 at the High-Level Political Forum in New York, USA, organized by the Government of Andorra and in partnership with the Mountain Partnership, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Governments of Argentina, Chile, Italy and Switzerland. The event focused on advocating for pro-mountain policies and actions in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda at the country level and building a coalition of key mountain governments within the Mountain Partnership. It looked at ways to increase the visibility of mountain issues in the national processes for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. It also focused on dialogue between mountain communities and governments by ensuring targeted support for mountain communities to enable effective interventions.

The side event was moderated by Grammenos Mastrojeni from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Italy and Chair of the Mountain Partnership Steering Committee. It featured interventions by Silvia Calvó Armengol, Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Sustainability from Andorra, Rene Castro, FAO Assistant Director General, Alejandro Verdier, Deputy Permanent Representative of Argentina to the UN, Jorge Iglesias, Deputy Permanent Representative of Chile to the UN and Christoph Lang, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, Switzerland.

Giorgio Grussu from the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, FAO and Yoko Watanabe from the UNDP Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grant Programme (SGP) highlighted monitoring and implementation processes of the relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
