Next MP Global Meeting to be held in Aspen, USA in 2022

16.06.2021

The Aspen International Mountain Foundation (AIMF) will host the sixth Global Meeting of the Mountain Partnership in Aspen, Colorado, United States of America in September 2022, as decided by vote of the Mountain Partnership Steering Committee.

In July 2020, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat distributed a call to all Mountain Partnership members requesting expressions of interest to host the next Global Meeting. A second call for expressions of interest was circulated in February 2021. Ultimately, four Mountain Partnership members submitted proposals: AIMF, the Canadian Mountain Network, Eurac Research and the Romanian National Agency for Mountain Areas.

After presenting their proposals at the Mountain Partnership Steering Committee meeting on 29 April 2021, the candidates’ proposals were compiled in a comparative table containing the most important matters for hosting a Global Meeting and given to the Steering Committee. The AIMF’s proposal was selected after receiving 71 percent of the Steering Committee’s vote.

“We look forward to working together to produce an event that will serve the Mountain Partnership’s goals and establish North America as a dedicated and active participant in the Mountain Partnership,” said Karinjo DeVore, President of AIMF and Mountain Partnership Steering Committee representative for Major Group Organizations of North and Central America and the Caribbean.

The Mountain Partnership Secretariat thanks all of the members that volunteered to host the Global Meeting. “We deeply appreciate the generous proposals and the commitment of Mountain Partnership members to sustainable mountain development. Our sincere congratulations to the AIMF, we look forward to seeing all of you in Aspen,” said Yuka Makino, Coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat.

Information regarding the upcoming Global Meeting will be shared among Mountain Partnership members in the coming months as it is available. Ahead of the Global Meeting, the Mountain Partnership’s strategy documents will be shared with members for comments and updating, and the final versions will be ratified at the next Global Meeting.

According to the Mountain Partnership’s Governance and Strategy, a Global Meeting is to be held at least once every four years, with all Mountain Partnership members generally expected to participate. Every effort is made to ensure that Global Meetings include not only agenda items to ratify governance and planning documents, but also a wide variety of knowledge sharing and networking activities designed to advance the mission of the Mountain Partnership. Since the Mountain Partnership was founded in 2002, five Global Meetings have been held: in Merano, Italy in 2002; in Cusco, Peru in 2004; in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2012; in Erzurum, Turkey in 2013; and in Rome, Italy in 2017.
