Mountain peak in Kyrgyzstan named after United Nations

04.07.2024

In a gesture recognizing the United Nations' (UN) pivotal role in environmental protection and global peace, Kyrgyzstan has named one of its mountain peaks "United Nations Peak" on 2 July 2024. The announcement was made by Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The newly named peak stands at 5 576 metres and is located in the picturesque Sary-Jaz valley within the Issyk-Kul region, specifically near the South Enilchek Glacier. The decision was formalized through a Presidential Decree, reflecting Kyrgyzstan's appreciation for the UN's efforts in addressing climate change and promoting worldwide security.

During their meeting, President Japarov highlighted the UN's significant contributions to environmental conservation. He presented Secretary-General Guterres with a certificate to commemorate the occasion.

The naming ceremony coincided with Guterres' tour of Central Asia, where he is set to visit Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. His itinerary includes meetings with presidents and senior government officials, as well as inspections of climate change-related projects and discussions with local activists.

Kyrgyzstan, known for its stunning mountainous landscapes, has 159 peaks and nearly 10 000 glaciers. However, the region has seen significant glacier reduction, underscoring the urgent need for effective environmental policies.

This tribute not only honours the UN but also brings attention to the critical issue of glacier preservation, a matter of great importance to Kyrgyzstan and the global community.
