MP Steering Committee plans for 2017

06.02.2017

Immediately following the third edition of the World Mountain Forum in Mbale, Uganda, the Mountain Partnership (MP) Steering Committee held its annual meeting at the Mount Elgon Hotel on 21-22 October 2016. This was the third formal meeting of the Steering Committee after its election at the Fourth Global Meeting of the MP in Erzurum, Turkey in 2013. Reporting and stocktaking, MP governance and strategy, work planning and prioritization, the financial report and resource mobilization, and the fifth global meeting of the MP in 2017 were the main agenda items covered during the deliberations.

Presented by Thomas Hofer, Coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS), the background paper “Three years after Erzurum: reflections by the Coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat” served as a basis for discussions under the different agenda items. As the work of the MP is guided by a governance and strategy for the period 2014 -2017, which was developed through a consultative process with MP members and finalized during the Fourth Global Meeting of the MP, the Steering Committee noted the necessity of holding a fifth global meeting in 2017 to approve a new and revised strategy as well as hold Steering Committee elections.

Furthermore, the SC provided support in guiding the MPS in its work and priority setting and in its advocacy efforts to champion the mountain agenda both globally at key UN events as well as initiatives at regional level. Appreciation was also expressed for the progress and innovative approach of the Mountain Partnership Products Initiative. Andrew Taber, representing the The Mountain Institute, served as Chair of the Steering Committee at this meeting. The Steering Committee decided to hold its next meeting, either virtually or face-to-face, in June 2017.
