Capture the importance of mountain ecosystem restoration, enter the International Mountain Day photo contest

10.11.2023

The theme of the International Mountain Day 2023 photo contest launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on 17 October 2023 is ''Restoring mountain ecosystems".

Mountain ecosystem services are vital to life, benefiting billions of people living in mountains and lowland areas. Mountains' role in providing freshwater, food, biodiversity and clean energy is crucial for the planet. Healthy mountain ecosystems help mitigate climate change impacts and the related risks. However, escalating risks from climate change, pollution and unsustainable development threaten mountains, people and the planet.

International Mountain Day 2023 is a chance to increase awareness about the relevance of mountain ecosystems and call for nature-based solutions, best practices and investments that build resilience, reduce vulnerability and increase the ability of mountains to adapt to daily threats and extreme climatic events.

Help put mountain ecosystem restoration in the spotlight and capture its importance by entering the photo contest ahead of International Mountain Day (11 December). To enter the contest, participants can submit up to three entries showcasing an aspect of mountain ecosystem restoration. Images could highlight restoration activities, healthy mountains and their positive effects, and the impacts of climate change to show why mountain ecosystem restoration matters.

The winner, selected by a FAO jury, will win a collection of FAO merchandise, including a backpack, water bottle and notebook, and the winning photo will be shared across FAO and the Mountain Partnership's social media channels.

The deadline for entries has been extended to 17 November 2023 (12.00 CET).
