Mountain Partnership to participate in State of the World’s Forest launch with FAO DG

20.05.2020

On Friday 22 May at 10.00 CET, Mountain Partnership member Sam Kanyamibwa, Executive Director of the Albertine Rift Conservation Society, will participate in the State of the World’s Forests (SOFO 2020) report launch event discussing the balance between conservation goals and demands for resources. The high-level panel also includes the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Director-General Qu Dongyu, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Inger Andersen and the Ministers of Environment of Indonesia and Mauritania.

The virtual event will also feature a short video and a presentation of the SOFO publication and its key findings. This event is organized by FAO and UNEP.

Friday’s high-level virtual event marks International Day for Biological Diversity, celebrated every year on 22 May. The theme of this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity is "Our solutions are in nature”.

SOFO reports on the status of forests, recent major policy and institutional developments, and key issues concerning the forest sector. It makes current, reliable and policy-relevant information widely available to facilitate informed discussion and decision-making with regard to the world's forests.

The SOFO 2020 publication assesses progress to-date in meeting global targets and goals relating to forest biodiversity, and describes the effectiveness of policies, actions and approaches for conservation and sustainable development alike, illustrated by case studies of innovative practices and win-win solutions. SOFO 2020 highlights that solutions that balance conservation and sustainable use of forest biodiversity are critical – and possible.
