CHINAR helps Uttarakhand families through COVID19 Relief Programme

16.06.2020

The Central Himalayan Institute for Nature and Applied Research (CHINAR) is supporting Himalayan communities through their COVID19 Relief Programme in the Bageshwar and Pithoragarh Districts of Uttarakhand, India. Through the project support provided by the Wipro Foundation, CHINAR has so far provided assistance to 673 families and aims to reach 850 families living in 23 villages.

The coronavirus outbreak has become a serious threat to the food security of a large number of people in India. The rural communities of the Himalaya, especially those in the most remote villages, are suffering from a shortage of food during this pandemic. The food supply (in addition to other goods) has been disrupted by the lockdown currently imposed in nearly all states of the country.

This issue has been compounded by unfavourable weather conditions this year, including a prolonged winter, continuous rain and hailstorms, all of which badly affect local mountain farmers.

To help support communities during these trying times, CHINAR has initiated a COVID19 Relief Programme that includes the distribution of dry ration supplies to marginalized rural communities. Benefitting communities include those in the villages in the Kapkot development block of the Bageshwar district and the Munsyari development block of the Pithoragarh district.

The relief package includes 10 kilograms of rice, 5 kilograms of wheat flour, 2 kilograms of lentils, 1 kilogram of sugar, 1 litre of cooking oil and 500 grams of tea leaves for each family.

CHINAR’s relief initiative has been spotlighted on various platforms, including a short video created by Carrot Films and a discussion on a local community radio station.
