IPROMO Latinoamericano 2023 concludes, alumni network welcomes the course’s 40 graduates

19.09.2023

On 15 September 2023, the second edition of IPROMO Latinoamericano drew to a close, concluding an engaging two-week virtual training programme focused on the theme "Sustainable management of high altitude socioecosystems in Latin America: Changes and continuity in mountain landscapes". IPROMO Latinoamericano 2023, held from 4 to 15 September, brought together 40 participants with diverse profiles and backgrounds from 10 Latin American countries for an enriching exchange of experiences and knowledge.

The IPROMO training programme is an annual initiative that has been conducted by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, in collaboration with the University of Turin and the University of Tuscia, since 2008. It has traditionally been held in English and in person, in Italy. IPROMO Latinoamericano is organized bi-annually by the Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion (CONDESAN), through the Adaptation at Altitude programme, and is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and supported by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat. It provides an opportunity to focus on the specific challenges of the Andes and other Latin American mountains and engage Spanish-speaking participants.

María Argüello, Executive Director of CONDESAN, stated, "One of the greatest challenges for Latin America is the sustainable development of mountain socioecosystems. The successful implementation of projects must be driven by in-depth knowledge of these diverse environments."

This year's edition of IPROMO Latinoamericano featured lectures by 20 experts in mountain research and sustainable management. Topics included the role of Latin American mountain ecosystems in regional sustainability, the causes and impacts of global changes on mountain ecosystems, governance models, dynamics of mountain landscapes, high elevation value chains, land degradation and rehabilitation, and food security and sovereignty. Keynote lectures were complemented by case studies, group work, roundtable discussions and debates, all designed to promote productive exchange between participants and speakers and foster a learning community.

The graduates of IPROMO Latinoamericano 2023 join the ranks of the over 550 other past IPROMO participants and will be welcomed to the IPROMO alumni network. Closely linked to the Mountain Partnership, this virtual network supports activities related to sustainable mountain development and promotes the sharing of mountain-related knowledge and information.

Rosalaura Romeo, Coordinator of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, stated, "By turning knowledge into action, the IPROMO alumni network can increase IPROMO's impact, leading towards a better future for mountains and the livelihoods of the people who depend on them."
