New ‘GeoPortal’ for Fouta Djallon Highlands

18.01.2013

The Fouta Djallon Highlands Integrated Natural Resources Management Project, implemented jointly by the African Union (AU), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), held a regional conference and training workshop in Dakar, Senegal from 10 to 16 December 2012.

The aim of the event was to present the results of the land cover mapping and change detection undertaken for the region and to introduce the GeoPortal, a geospatial portal for data dissemination and sharing.

More than 50 participants from seven countries representing governments, research institutes, NGOs and the three regional River Basin Commissions attended the one-day conference, and 20 technical experts were trained subsequently in two parallel sessions.

The GeoPortal will be a key tool to document significant geo-spatial datasets and outputs collected by the Guinea project and its partners and generate and disseminate high quality information for an improved management of the natural resources of the area.
