UN issues report on sustainable mountain development

19.09.2013

The UN Secretary-General report on sustainable mountain development (SMD) has been released: it focuses on relevant key activities implemented at both national, regional and international level between 2011 and 2013. The report, prepared by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the Mountain Partnership Secretariat in collaboration with governments, relevant UN agencies and other organizations, identifies future challenges of SMD and proposes to the UN General Assembly recommendations on sustainable development in mountain regions.

The report documents experiences collected worldwide on concerns such as climate change impacts in mountain areas, conservation of mountain ecosystems, watershed management for drinking-water supply,  governance, food security and nutrition.

The UN Secretary-General report on SMD recommends to prioritize mountain issues in international development agendas and national strategies, to strengthen SMD through supporting relevant policies and institutional mechanisms as well as to invest in education and capacity-building programmes which can contribute to the empowerment of  indigenous people and women. The report encourages all relevant stakeholders to get involved  in the Mountain Partnership and join forces for SMD.
