Rural Andean communities share family farming approaches

31.10.2013

The international conference, “Knowledge and Practices of Rural Communities,” closed with a 15-point declaration appealing to policy makers of the Andean region to support family farming on 1-3 October 2013 in Lima, Peru.

The event drew more than 150 participants, including small farmers, researchers and development leaders from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, with the participation of Mountain Partnership members, the Government of Peru and Consortium for Sustainable Development of the Andean Ecoregion (CONDESAN).

The international event provided a chance to exchange experiences and knowledge on themes that affect the Andean people and encourage transboundary collaboration. Participants shared best practices on family farming, agroecology and food security to shed light on their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities.

Verónica Ricaldi, a small-holder farmer in Pasco, Peru, and Wilson Cubillos, President of Manizales City Council, Colombia, were recognized for their outstanding efforts in promoting the cultural values of family farming within their communities. Read more
