New leader for US mountain learning programme

05.05.2014

Vicki Fenwick-Judy is The Mountain Institute’s (TMI) new Appalachia Program Director. In this role, she will be taking up the leadership of the US-based organization’s environmental, watershed and wilderness education in the region, particularly focusing on underserved communities. Her responsibilities will also include identifying opportunities for the Institute to contribute to conserving nature while advancing sustainable economic development.

Fenwick-Judy joins TMI with a passion for community-based education. She currently serves as the West Virginia representative for the Mid-Atlantic Environmental Education Workgroup. A lifelong resident of West Virginia, she grew up working and playing in the mountains and rivers of the state.

TMI’s Appalachia Program focuses on developing an understanding and appreciation for the complex interaction between community, culture and conservation through education and sustainable community initiatives. The heart of the program is the Spruce Knob Mountain Center, which serves as the homebase for TMI's wide variety of Mountain Learning courses. Whether held in West Virginia, the rugged and isolated Allagash River of Maine or the biodiverse hotspot of the Florida Keys, these programmes for students, teachers or other groups bring adventure, group process skills, leadership development, conservation and environmental education together in a rigorous and invigorating environment.

It is the mission of Mountain Learning Programs to help people become powerful, secure, knowledgeable individuals with a clear vision of their responsibilities and potential for improving the human condition and the natural world.

The Mountain Institute is a non-profit organization promoting economic development in mountain communities, conservation of mountain environments and support for mountain cultures, and has been working to advance outdoor education and stewardship in West Virginia since 1972.
