Afghan mountain eco-tourism training seen in Italy

19.08.2014

A conference and documentary screening on eco-tourism training sessions held in the mountains in Afghanistan took place in Popoli, Italy, on 18 July 2014. The event was co-organized by Mountain Wilderness, which has taken part in eco-friendly tourism training activities in the Wakhan area of the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan and Pakistan for over a decade.

The training sessions in Afghanistan in 2005 and 2006 inspired Carlo Alberto Pinelli - a mountaineer, environmentalist and filmmaker - to produce the documentary, "Siddiqa e le Altre – un sogno afgano", or “Siddia and the Others – an Afghan dream”.

Residents of Populi gathered to discuss the ‘sublime landscape’ and watch the film with the Italian director, who has dedicated many years to calling for the protection of mountain environments.

The training programs see the participation of young people from the Wakhan region trained by European professionals on technical aspects of mountaineering at middle and high elevations. The courses are accompanied by awareness-raising efforts about mountain environment protection. The aim is to provide trainees with a sufficient level of competency to supervise groups of visitors safely, respecting the environment and to develop new economic resources for the Wakhan area communities.
