Inspiring sustainable mountain development in Africa

02.09.2014

Aiming to ‘inspire sustainable mountain development in Arica,’ the second issue of ‘African Mountains’ Echo’ was released in August 2014. The newsletter, published by the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) with support from the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation, focuses on water, food security and climate change.

The 11-page biannual newsletter in English and French delves into the many African mountain goods and services - from raw materials, firewood and water to tourism – that people rely on to make their livelihoods. Readers can learn more about French Mountain becoming a protected area in Madagascar, a climate change adaptation project in the Mount Elgon region and what is causing major rivers in the Rwenzori Mountains to dry up.

A feature story profiles one the African Mountain Partnership members, the Mountain Research Centre in Uganda. Part of Makere University, the centre conducts research to generate knowledge to guide decision-making in pursuit of sustainable mountain development within the country and abroad.

While the emphasis is on Africa, the issue also reports that mountains were mentioned three times in latest draft of the Sustainable Development Goals, which will be proposed to the UN General Assembly in September 2014.

‘African Mountains’ Echo’ closes with an announcement about the first-ever African Mountains Regional Forum, scheduled for October 2014 in Arusha, Tanzania. For details about the meeting organized by ARCOS and the African Mountain Partnership Champions Committee, visit
