05.09.2014

To orient and build the media’s capacity to report on climate change and development issues, Centre for Environment Education (CEE) Himalaya and The Third Pole conducted a workshop on 30 July-1 August 2014 in Shimla, India, as part of the Indian Himalayas Climate Adaptation Programme (IHCAP). Journalists, who report on Himalayan issues for print, TV, online and radio outlets from Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, attended. Senior thematic experts and policymakers made presentations to journalists and interacted with them. The Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change were the knowledge partners in the workshop.

This workshop was the first in a series of four. The second workshop is scheduled for journalists from West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Sikkim and parts of Assam on 17-19 November 2014 in Eastern Himalaya, in the State of Sikkim. The remaining two workshops will be conducted in 2015.

Following the workshop, participants are expected to develop stories on various climate change and development issues and have them reported in the media.

As an outcome of the first workshop, four media stories have been published by workshop participants:

More stories are expected in the days to come. We encourage people to read these interesting stories and encourage their local media to address to climate change and development issues more and more in their region, says CEE Himalaya Programme Director Abdhesh Gangwar.
