In memoriam: Louis Pascal Camara

09.09.2014

It is with great sadness that we report the loss of one the Mountain Partnership’s focal points. Louis Pascal Camara, who worked at the Ministry of Energy and Environment of Guinea, passed away in Conakry on 31 August 2014.

His kind-hearted and solid support of mountain issues will be missed. “Louis Pascal was always very engaged and one of the first members to take action,” Rosalaura Romeo of the Mountain Partnership Secretariat said.

Camara was in the midst of several international mountain-related activities. At his encouragement, the Guinean government proposed a mountain-related side event at the UNFCCC Conference of Parties to take place in Lima, Peru, in December 2014. He was also mobilizing a Guinean delegation of government and civil society representatives to attend the African Mountains Regional Forum in Arusha, Tanzania, in October 2014, where he was on the programme to talk about national efforts in sustainable mountain development.

“We have lost a professional colleague, very good communicator, but also a good man,” said Sam Kanyamibwa of the Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS).

Many members remember his soft-spoken style from last year’s Fourth Global Meeting in Erzurum, Turkey. “This is very sad indeed and a great loss to the Mountain Partnership family as Louis was one of great pillars for the Mountain Partnership in Africa,” said Paul Mafabi of the Government of Uganda.

On behalf of the Partnership, we extend our condolences to his friends and family to whom we wish strength and courage.
