Preserving the Dolomite mountains

To commemorate the five-year anniversary of the Dolomites being named a World Heritage site, Mountain Wilderness Italy held a hike at Croda Rossa on 2 and 3 August 2014.
At the same time, the initiative aimed to raise public awareness about the need to strengthen the protection of this fragile environment. Mountain Wilderness objects to facilities projects inconsistent with the Charter of the World Heritage, in particular: connections between ski resorts, such as between Monte Elmo and Croda Rossa, opening of trails in the forest, as in Moena, hydroelectric plants construction, implementation of new roads, as in Cadore, etc.
Mountain Wilderness calls for the writing of management documents for the World Heritage area, in consultation with the associations working for environment protection.
On 26 June 2009, after years of mobilization efforts carried out by environmental associations, UNESCO added the Dolomites, a mountain range located in the northern Italian Alps with18 peaks that rise to above 3 000 metres, to the World Heritage list. Mountain Wilderness was a key architect of this listing.
World Heritage sites are places that meet with specific criteria and are considered to be of outstanding universal value to humanity that must be protected for future generations.
