Mountains to be featured at climate change summit

Mountains and water will be the focus of a large exhibition and event space at the 20^th session of the Conference of Parties (COP20) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Lima, Peru, on 1-12 December 2014. Mountains and water are one of five topics that will be featured in discussions, exhibits and videos at five separate pavilions located at the Jockey Club del Peru, a few blocks from the COP20 venue. The other four issues that have been identified as priorities in a changing climate are forests, oceans, energy and sustainable cities.

The Mountain and Water Pavilion will centre on four themes:

• Water, Glaciers and Basins;

• Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Food Security;

• Integrated Climate Risk Management; and

• Goods and Services, and Sustainable Investments.

The Pavilion, organized by the Ministry of Environment of Peru; Swiss Development Cooperation; CONDESAN; Belgium Technical Cooperation; Inter-American Development Bank; National Water Authority; SERNANP; International Potato Center; and CARE, will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. throughout COP20.

A side event on mountains

A panel discussion on ‘Mountains and water – from understanding to action’ will be held alongside COP20. The lunch-hour gathering will bring attention to the role, challenges and opportunities of mountains as the water towers of the world in a changing climate on International Mountain Day (11 December).

Bhutan, Guinea, Kyrgyzstan, The Mountain Institute and the Mountain Partnership are working together to convene the meeting.
