Mountains draw audience during climate summit

22.01.2015

The Mountain and Water Pavilion, held during the 20th Conference of Parties (COP20) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Lima, Peru, in December 2014, saw the participation of 80 000 people from 90 countries, including climate negotiators, ministers, indigenous leaders, civil society leaders, entrepreneurs and researchers.

The Mountain and Water Pavilion, organized by the Government of Peru with support from the Government of Switzerland and several partners including MINAM, CONDESAN and more resulted in calls for more climate finance and respect for human rights in several keynote speeches delivered by policy makers and experts during the UN climate change conference, reports the Cooperación Suiza en Perú website.

Over the course of twelve days, the Pavilion hosted more than 50 events including roundtable discussions, multimedia exhibitions and ministerial meetings to underline the importance of mountain and water to the sustainable development. The Pavilion space and events unfolded around four themes:

  • Water, Glaciers and Basins;
  • Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Food Security;
  • Risk Management; and
  • Goods and Services of the Mountains, Investment and Beneficiaries.

All activities were aimed at devising transformative solutions to address challenges in facing climate change in mountain areas. Experts from around the world gave presentations, sharing new perspectives, project lessons and innovative mechanisms based on the development experiences in the mountain regions.

World leaders participated in the International Mountain Day Celebration held alongside COP20 at the Pavilion. During the IMD event, two publications and a short documentary film on mountains were released and 60 young volunteers were trained in specific themes.
