Quality term for mountain products in EU

Entitled “Quality from the mountains – Prosperity for people and territories”, the IXth European Mountain Convention took place in Bilbao, Spain, on 22–24 October 2014, organized by Euromontana (European Association of Mountain areas) and the Basque Government.

During the three days, 300 mountain stakeholders discussed the opportunities for the development of European mountains given by the new optional quality term “mountain product” and the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Discover here the conclusions of the interactive working sessions.

Building on Euromontana’s work on the EU’s CAP, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has recently launched a new project aiming to promote and protect high value mountain products as a strategy for sustainable development in mountain regions at global level. In collaboration with the members of the Mountain Partnership, the project specifically aims to establish a light certification scheme to brand mountain products so as to benefit local producers and help them to better tackle market challenges.
