Defending silence in Spain’s mountains

08.05.2015

Mountain Wilderness Catalonia will organize a meeting for the defence of silence in the mountains on Sunday 17 May 2015 at Prat de Cadi (Cerdanya) in the Catalonian Pyrenees, Lleida, Spain.

In a world increasingly busy and invaded by artefacts, where technique fascinates, we are at risk of losing the perceptions of things as they are. Experiencing full and rewarding contact with the nature requires having the possibility to capture its rhythms.

Silence, in advanced societies, becomes a first order value. In the Western world, the places where silence can be felt are progressively reduced to small territorial reserves. The mountains are the last remaining silence areas, and there we will find it, enjoy it and digest it.

The mountains, increasingly accessible, are not excluded of the dynamics that affect the rest of the territory. The use of motor vehicles and electronic equipment is threatening the harmony of nature.

Silence provides quality in the practice of mountaineering and hiking. Respect of silence requires areas well preserved and well protected from noisy uses, but also, above all, the awareness from the part of the visitors of most emblematic places.
