MP members plan mountain event for 2016

Mountains 2016 is an international event about the sustainable development of mountains in Europe and the world, based on science, knowledge and innovation. It will bring together scientists, farmers, decision-makers, NGOs, and other mountain stakeholders from different regions of the world to share experiences and discuss solutions towards local and global sustainable development. It comprises two events: the X European Mountain Convention (EMC) and the I International Conference on Research for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions. The EMC is the European Mountain Convention, organized every two years by Euromontana, the European Association for the Development of Mountain Areas, in different parts of Europe in collaboration with one of their 75 members. It will take place 3-5 October 2016.

The I International Conference on Research for Sustainable Development in Mountain Environments (ICSDME) is a scientific event aiming to share and discuss methods, tools, results, applications, and trends and challenges in research in mountains. It will take place from 5-7 October 2016. Mountains 2016 is organized by the Mountains Research Centre (CIMO) and the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, Portugal, with the European Mountains Association (Euromontana), the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Mountain Development at the University of the Highlands and Islands, UK, and the Douro Wine Region Cluster (ADVID), the Municipality of Bragança,  the Portuguese Association of Young Farmers (AJAP), Crescente Fértil (Brazil), and international organizations, the Mountain Partnership and Mountain Research Initiative.

The event Mountains 2016 was publically launched on 29 April at the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, in Bragança, Portugal in a session with the participation of the President of Euromontana - European Mountain Association, Juan Andrès Gutierrez, the Head of Research and Development of Embrapa Agrobiology, Brazil, Maria Elizabeth Fernandes Correia (through video-conference), the President of the Municipality of Bragança, Hernani Dias, and the Vice-President of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, Orlando Rodrigues. The session was organized to announce the event to the local, national and international mountains related communities. Information concerning dates, venues, objectives, structure, logotype, webpage, and promotion materials, including the official promotional video of Mountains 2016, were also disclosed at the event. The session was broadcast through the internet.
