Sign the petition for mountains

30.10.2015

The current draft of the international climate change agreement has a proposed mention of mountains, which the petition being circulated by the Mountain Partnership (MP) aims to retain in the final draft. (Please sign the petition here.) The online petition calls on delegates at the 21st session of the Conference of Parties (COP21) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to include mountain peoples and ecosystems in their discussions in December.

Mountains, the water towers and food baskets for both mountain peoples and lowland communities, are often fragile and disrupted by climate change. Signatories to the petition encourage better climate change adaptation measures, investments and policies to avoid further damage to humans and wildlife in addition to the mountainous environments.

Another 1 500 signatures are needed by 29 November 2015 for the International Petition on Mountain Ecosystems and Peoples Affected by Climate Change to be presented at COP21. Over 3 500 people, including the Mountain Partnership’s three ambassadors: Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang, Jake Norton and Reinhold Messner, in more than 70 countries have the signed the petition thus far. MP members and friends are avidly promoting the petition at events and on social media.

“In addition to supporting the petition, MP members are invited to contact their national UNFCCC focal points to request including the reference to ‘mountainous states’ in paragraph four of the final draft agreement”, urges Rosalaura Romeo of the MP Secretariat. Focal points’ contact information can be found on the UNFCCC website. The draft agreement (issued on 10 November 2015) can be found here.

At COP21 in Paris, France, the Mountain Partnership Secretariat, alongside members, will bring visibility to mountains during two side events:

All interested and accredited parties are welcome to attend these two events as well as the mountain exhibition stand, co-organized with the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (UIAA). The exhibition will be held throughout the two-week long COP (30 November – 11 December) at the climate Generations area.
