Managing Abruzzo’s protected areas

10.12.2015

On 10 November 2015, the Italian League for Bird Protection (LIPU), Mountain Wilderness Italy, Pro Natura, Save the Bear (Salviamo l’Orso), the Italian Touring Club and the World Wildlife fund (WWF) issued a press release requesting the opening of a discussion of the master plan on the management of the protected areas in the Abruzzo Region.

The nature protection associations express their concern regarding new interconnections of ski resorts, planned in the Gran Sasso and Majella National Parks.  They underline the lack of measures intended to protect mountain areas, particularly those listed in the framework of the Natura 2000 directive of the European Union.

They request a meeting with the stakeholders of the Region, with some proposals aiming at the implementation of a tourist activity that would be more respectful of the environment. Among them are the valorization of the presence of the bear, the restoration of degraded landscapes or the development of winter activities outside mechanized skiing.
