Second Montanha Pico Festival triples audience

02.02.2016

The launch of two books, "Montanhas" by Planeta Tangerina, led by illustrator Madalena Matoso, complete with activities for children, and "Passo a Passo" by Pedro Cuiça, about trekking and walking in the mountains, closed a successful second edition of the festival promoted by MiratecArts in Portugal.

Filmmaker Luis Filipe Rocha presented his new film "Grey & Black", in which the mountain is a main character. The Azorean premiere of the film "Wolf Totem", by Jean Jacques Annaud, was presented to a sold out crowd, as well as the Tea Events at the Mountain House on Sunday afternoons. Wednesday night screenings showcased 25 films from various countries and the four exhibitions were visited by thousands of people.

A collection of eight stamps by Veronica Melo on the flora of Azores Islands portraying endemic species of the mountain of Pico, Silene Uniflora Cratericola, were also presented during the festival. Other artists were inspired to create projects on the mountain theme, making it a very successful festival not only for raising awareness on the issues that affect mountain regions, but also for the creation of products that will keep educating and incentivizing more study about Pico Mountain and the world.

Through music, dance, film, exhibitions and discussions, MiratecArts winter festival celebrated mountains around the world from the tallest one in the country of Portugal, the mountain island of Pico in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Department of Environment of the Azores Government has already guaranteed the MiratecArts organization support for the third edition of the festival, scheduled for International Mountain Day, 11 December 2016, and all throughout the month of January 2017.
