Promoting SMD in 2015

25.03.2016

The Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS) reflects on its key achievements in promoting sustainable mountain development (SMD) last year in its 2015 annual report. Called “Our Journey in 2015: Mountain Partnership Secretariat Annual Report”, the publication documents the Secretariat’s work in the areas of advocacy, communication and knowledge management, International Mountain Day, joint action, capacity development, innovation and resource mobilization.

“In view of the universally important resources mountain ecosystems provide, such as fresh water, biodiversity and food, sustainable mountain development is a corporate responsibility of humanity and a contribution to peace-making in the world.” writes Thomas Hofer, MPS Coordinator in his opening message, encouraging Mountain Partnership members to “speak with one voice, join forces to raise political attention and promote investments for mountain areas”.

The 54-page publication highlights noteworthy achievements, such as publishing “Mapping the vulnerability of mountain peoples to food insecurity”; celebrating International Mountain Day with 67 events in 40 countries and training participants of the International Programme on Research and Training on Sustainable Management of Mountain Areas (IPROMO) on food security issues. The publication also features a regional section, outlining the sustainable mountain development efforts made by members in the various regions.

Since its establishment in 2002, Mountain Partnership (MP) has been working together to raise awareness of the global importance of mountain ecosystems, improve the lives of mountain peoples and conserve mountainous environments.
