 Mountains to be featured at CBD COP 1306.12.2016Mountain Partnership (MP) members and other institutions are organizing side events and exhibitions to highlight mountains during the 13th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 13) to the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) on 4-17 December 2016 in Cancun, Mexico. Half of the world’s biodiversity hotspots are concentrated in mountains and mountains support approximately one-quarter of terrestrial biological diversity; however, climate change, poverty, commercial mining, logging and poaching put pressures on mountain biodiversity. The CBD COP 13 will focus on mainstreaming biodiversity across relevant sectors, especially agriculture, fisheries, forestry and tourism, to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals, climate action, food security and other human development goals. MP members are organizing the following mountain-related official CBD COP 13 side events: On 9 December at 18.15, the Alpine Convention, Carpathian Convention, CBD Secretariat, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Slovak Presidency of the Council of the European Union, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Conservation Monitoring Centre will hold the side event “Mainstreaming the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Mountain Biodiversity for Wellbeing”. This event will focus on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity for wellbeing in transboundary mountain regions, drawing on the experiences and best practices of the Carpathians, as well as other mountain regions such as the Alps and the Hindu-Kush Himalayas. On 12 December at 13.15, ICIMOD, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India, the Wildlife Institute of India and the World Bank will host the side event “Achieving Conservation Outcomes through Integrated Landscape Approaches”. This event will highlight how large landscapes having globally significant biodiversity have the potential for supporting enhanced economic growth, employment generation and sustainable production. The hosts will present different examples from India, who has successfully taken the lead in piloting and testing the implementation of Integrated Landscape Approaches for Conservation in a number of landscapes and seascapes throughout the country. MP members will also have exhibits at the Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) Fair, taking place during COP 13: On 8 December at 10.00-13.00, VICAM: Vicuñas, Camelids and Environment will host a dialogue on the conservation and management of vicuñas in Santa Catalina, Jujuy, Argentina. Bibiana Vilá, the Scientific Coordinator of the Commission of Biodiversity and Sustainability Science Ministry of Argentina, will present the results of VICAM’s research on the topic during this CEPA Fair side event. Other mountain-related events: National, Regional & Global Challenges in Biodiversity Conservation in Iran Himalayan Biodiversity and Climate Change COP is the governing body of the Convention, and advances implementation of the Convention.
