Namibia hosts African climate negotiators

15.05.2012

The African Group of Negotiators (AGN) on Climate Change - a platform for African Member States’ senior officials, experts and negotiators in the United Nations Framework on the Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC) negotiations - held their preparatory meeting in Windhoek, Namibia, on 17 April 2012. Africa currently faces many challenges associated with the adverse effects of climate change. Namibia’s Deputy Minister of Environment and Tourism, Uahekua Herunga, said Africa must speak with “one voice” in the negotiations process for the future climate change agreement. “As Africa, we contributed the least to the cause of global warming. Thus we need to persuade those who caused global warming to bridge the gap on mitigation pledges in order to avoid the risk of an increase in global average temperatures,” Herunga added. He said developed countries must show leadership to raise the level of ambition to the scale required by science. The meeting resolved that the Continent must remain united in efforts to demand for climate justice.
