University of Calgary publishes an assessment of Canadian mountains

Mountain Partnership member the University of Calgary published The Canadian Mountain Assessment, a first-of-its-kind look at what is known, what is not known, and what needs to be known about mountain systems in Canada. The new collection of knowledge clarifies challenges and opportunities specific to mountain systems and will inform mountain action, policy and research.

The assessment is based on insights from Indigenous knowledges of mountains from First Nations, Métis and Inuit knowledge, as well as findings from an extensive assessment of pertinent Western academic literature. The publication's inclusive knowledge co-creation approach brings these diverse forms of evidence together in ways that enhance our collective understanding of mountains in Canada, while also respecting and maintaining the integrity of different knowledge systems. The book is the outcome of over three years of work and contributions from more than 70 Indigenous and non-Indigenous authors.

The Canadian Mountain Assessment aims to enhance appreciation of the diverse and significant Canadian mountains, provide insight into mountain system challenges and opportunities, and support sustainable mountain development. It provides insights into applied reconciliation efforts in a knowledge assessment context and hopes to inspire further knowledge collaborations.
